This body of work is inspired by my mother, a strong Pakistani woman who constantly challenges the patriarchal system in a conservative society, hiding her struggles behind a ghunghat of elegance and poise. She is sensual, compassionate, adaptable, complex and above all emotionally strong.
The ghunghat (a Hindi word for a wedding veil) in these images represents the beauty of a woman’s strength that is unique to her personality and experiences. It is one that she weaves, embroiders and decorates patiently - beautifying her pain and scars.
This series was published in a fine art photography book titled Kamsukhan, celebrating the essence of the Pakistani women. It also won an Honourable Mention Pro IPA award in 2013.
